Universe in the Park

Universe in the Park is an outreach program led by Prof. Eric Wilcots at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. During my time at UW-Madison and later at UW-Milwaukee I was actively contributing this program by running, often with another grad student, more than a dozen of these events.

Amnicon Falls is located 10 miles southeast of Superior, WI in the very northwestern corner of Wisconsin, and roughly 10 miles south of the south shore of Lake Superior. Similar to Pattison State Park a little further west it features a range of water falls which, at the time of our visit, were overflowing due to 6 inches (150 liters per square meter) of rain earlier that week.

Aurorae (-> wikipedia), also known as northern lights, are caused when energetic particles from the solar wind are caught/trapped by the earth's magnetic field and interact with the upper atmosphere.

We were lucky to observe this spectacle after the observing session at Amnicon Falls State Park on 05 August 2011.

These pictures were particularly shot to serve as "classical" Universe in the Park shots for Press releases, newsletters, etc.

They can be used free of charge, as long proper credit is given.

Also, please let me know if you use any of my photos so I can keep track of them.

Thanks.

Pattison State Park is located 10 miles southwest of Superior, WI in the very northwestern corner of Wisconsin. Its most prominent attraction are two big waterfalls, the larger one of which is the fourth largest in the US. Most of the trails and large parts of the park were closed during my time there due to 6 inches (150 liters per square meter) of rain earlier that week.
